Grading
Grading
Weekly, you’ll turn in Writer Critique Group evaluations. Every two weeks you’ll be turning in a portfolio that will be used as part of the grade for the grading period (and for the semester). This will include:
Weekly (50 points) A writer’s critique group evaluation. I’ll give you a form to fill out.
Bi-weekly (110 points)
1.Three of the freewrites produced over the two weeks
2. Three of the exercises produced over the two weeks (and/or anything I require to be turned in week to week. For example, when we read non-fiction articles, the work will be included in your bi-weekly portfolio.)
3.A paragraph of an author’s fiction (100 words of more) writing from our readings over the two weeks (or elsewhere) and an analysis of why that piece of writing is particularly good or not good, in your opinion.
4. Your bi-weekly impression of what you think your longer project for the semester will be. (This needs to be at least 50 words, no more than 100 words.)
5.Any thoughts or questions you might have up to that point.
Grading Period (approximately every 6 weeks) (200 points)
A longer writing assignment. For the first grading period, it will be a draft of a short story. In the following grading periods, you will have more choices on what project you may want to do. They may include:
1.An edited, polished short story of 1,000 words or more, with a rough draft.(a short story collection could be your semester project)
2.A graphic novel of 25 pages or more with original art work and original text. 800 words minimum. (you could continue it for your semester project)
3.Three chapters of a longer piece (novel or novella) that you may or may not want to continue as your semester project.
4. Other ideas? Talk to me.
Semester (toward the end of the 18-week semester) Lots o’ points.
Your semester-long project, will be a novel/novella, or collection of short stories, or a graphic novel with original artwork. You may include the things you’ve turned in previously for grades, polished in a more presentable form. You will be working on this all semester with the goal of eventually getting it published (we hope!)
